Creating a wholly new project is a feat. The process leads to something new &—hopefully—exciting, but it’s a learning experience, forcing you to challenge yourself, your creativity, your resilience & your expectations. I learned innumerable lessons while working on the Meekly Yours wedding collection. Here are five of the most important lessons I learned.
1. It helps to learn the playing field.
Although the Meekly Yours wedding collection is not my first time creating wedding pieces, it is my first time approaching the wedding industry head on. Making that first step can be very intimidating & overwhelming so I wanted to be prepared. I asked other designers about their experiences & even surveyed wedding planners across the country about the weddings they work on. That feedback is a major part of how I planned my offerings, set expectations & had confidence during the process.
2. Details matter.
Creating a wedding collection is a big project which means a lot of details—dimensions, scope of work, papers, delivery methods, presentation, audience, themes, etc.—to consider. Each detail has the potential to shift the path & timeline of the collection. Every day new details pop up, which often left me feeling discouraged & exasperated. However, the more details that I that I could address before launching the suites, the stronger & more encompassing I was able to build the experience for future couples.
3. Don't panic!
According to Murphy’s Law, “Everything that can go wrong will.” No matter how well researched, strategized & planned out a project may be, details will invariably go sideways throughout the creative process. Finalizing a suite design took longer than planned. An entire suite was designed with the wrong dimensions. The envelope liners weren’t coming together as anticipated. The printer left pieces out of the final order. There were moments while creating the wedding collection that I wanted to panic, give up & curl up in bed, but what would that accomplish? Trying to stay calm & focus on finding a solution helped me to stay on track & motivated to keep working.
4. Having a strong support system is invaluable.
I am not perfect nor is my process. Trying to handle shortcomings & setbacks alone is daunting, but that’s where a strong support system comes to the rescue. From giving kind words & support to reviewing & editing copy, friends, family & followers played a critical role in my creative process. Taking on such a multi-faceted project was definitely a team effort
5. Stay true to yourself.
The Meekly Yours wedding collection has a unique, offbeat style that’s meant to stand out. Taking a nontraditional path can have benefits, but it can also be scary. As I worked through my process, I consistently evaluated my work & worried that no one would like the final designs. Why not scale back my designs to match the rest of industry? Because Meekly Yours is different & is focused on creating unique designs. My work isn’t for everyone & that’s okay. So far, the new wedding collection is off to a great, well-received start & it will only get better.
Creating the Meekly Yours wedding collection has been an amazing experience & I look forward to working with amazing couples & seeing the collection grow.
