It started with an idea.
In the fall of 2014, I had an idea. I decided to take the quirky, whimsical doodles in my sketchbook & try to turn them into a business. I knew a little about running a business from watching my parents run their brick & mortar shop. I knew it would be hard. I knew that I had a lot to learn. I knew I had to start small.
From looking for unique gifts for friends & family, I was familiar with Etsy & I liked their focus on handmade, creative small businesses. Etsy also offered a low barrier to entry—no big overhead fees, lots of listing options & the ability to control how I managed my shop. Etsy was the best place to get my brain thinking like a business owner & see what products I should sell. I got everything ready & opened my shop in January 15th with about six card designs.
That was then, this is now.
Fast froward to 2019, my business is still small but growing—a “microbusiness”, as I like to call it—& I am proud of how far the business has come in the last 4.5yrs.
My inventory has grown from 6 cards to over 50 items, including cards, bookmarks, prints, stickers, wood signs & seasonal items. I have sold at dozens of in person markets across the Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC & North Carolina which have allowed me to meet so many incredible people & gather so many new ideas. I have partnered with individuals & other small businesses to create unique, custom designs to add their own dash of whimsy to the world. I have experimented with social media & blogging with mixed success. Despite my small successes, I still have a long way to go & a lot to learn to make my business the best it can be.
So Long, Etsy.
After a lot of thought, I have decided to close my Etsy shop. Etsy was a great place for me to start my business, but it has a become a saturated platform. While Etsy is still a great for many shops, the time, effort & learning I need to make my shop successful takes my attention away from growing my business in other ways such as creating more original designs & promoting my work in person & online. My Etsy shop will officially close on Aug 1, 2019.
The Good News.
Changes can be hard, but so many friends, family, fans & project partners have supported my business over the years. To thank all of you, you can save 25% with code THANKS4FISH” on all orders in my Etsy shop & Meekly Yours shop until July 31, 2019 at 11:59pm. YAY!
The other good news is Meekly Yours is not going anywhere. I am working behind the scene on a bunch of new designs for release in fall 2019. I have a market scheduled in Raleigh, NC, on Aug 19th. I am planning the best way to share projects & behind the scenes with you on the blog (2nd times the charm), Instagram & Facebook. I am doing lots of research, making smart decisions & planning the best course for my business so Meekly Yours’ future. Things may seem quiet, but I promise I am working continue to bring fun, whimsical designs to your everyday stories & I hope to for years to come.
