This month, Tuesday Together groups are focusing on networking & relationships. Networking can be intimidating & overwhelming. It's easy to feel pressured to talk to everyone in the room or walk away with your next big project to count a networking opportunity as successful. With practice it does become easier to talk about yourself & your business & find connections, but approaching someone you haven't met—especially if they play are significant role in the community or industry—can still be a challenge.
As I was reading through the articles in this month's guide, I was reminded of this quote my husband uses all the time: “Treat people like people.” It seems so basic, but it's an idea we often forget. It's normal to get nervous, meeting new people & opening up about your business, but networking doesn't even have to be about a sales pitch.
Effective networking comes from building valuable, in-depth relationships. Whether you're talking to the CEO of a major agency or the junior designer of a new startup, find ways to connect with them on a personal level & have a meaningful conversation. Every conversation may not translate into a new job, new client, or new insight that will take your career to the next level, but one really good conversation can be the connection that leads to a important referral later on or a lifelong friendship that helps support you through difficult patches.
“Papered Thoughts” is an ongoing series, sharing thoughts on positive & motivational quotes to uplift & inspire readers to think differently & become better.
